It was finely organized, carefully prepared and splendidly staged affair, one of the most gratifyingly successful festivals the New York Hungarians have ever produced. The others in other Hungarian centers were just as memorable, showing the undying spirit of Hungarian resistance against evil and tyranny. ♦ Two district conferences were held since the last issue of the “Testvériség” was published, one in the Bronx, N. Y. for the workers of the New York district and one in Cleveland, for the Ohio district. The first one is the smallest and the second one is the largest of our organizational district. On both occasions our most urgent problems were discussed thoroughly in a friendly and intimate manner. The President and Secretary participated from the Home Ohio is our largest district, with more than 9000 members. This district has our largest branches, like the one in Toledo, with its able local manager, Emery W. Percei. This young man, of course, is a second generation Hungarian, who “inherited” — so to speak — the Toledo branch from his father, the older Emery Percei who for many years faithfully worked in the same capacity and who was in many respects responsible for the rapid growth of our membership in Toledo. The younger Percei is one of our ablest and most conscientious branch managers. He handled the affairs of 1256 members at the beginning of 1950 and at the end of the year increased this impressive figure to over 1300. The new additions to our Bethlen Home in Ligonier, Pa. will cost about $95,000.00, for which a new wing for 26 old people will be built on the Hill and a new, suitable home for the Superintendent and his family annexed to the main building. No one should be scared by this large amount. The Home is in a strong financial position. In the last ten years it has paid off $100,000.00 of its mortgage, the balance of which is now only $29,000.00. The next 10—15 years will most probably see the Home free from all mortgage debts — thanks to our Federation and the good-hearted Hungarians all over the United Sates. At present we have 40 old people in the Home, with 15 others trying to get in, but for whom at present there are no accomodations. The new addition will house 26 additional old people. It will be an absolutely modern building, fireproof, with radiant heat, fulfilling the highest requirements and expectations. In addition to the building costs, the expense for the furnishings will be about $500.00 per room. The new quarters for the Superintendent’s family will release the rooms of the old apartment for housing more children in the main building.
