20 TESTVÉRISÉG into their lives. If the church can give this to them, then their spiritual attachment to the church will indeed be of such primary importance in their lives that nothing shall ever be able to sever it. The Post War Period If we closely analyze each post-war period, we find that there are three different stages through which people pass. The first stage is war-weariness — letting off excessive steam as we would say. The second period is the postwar prosperity or boom period. And the third period is the secondary post-war depression. If we analyze the post-war period following any great war in our own country, we will find that our country passed through these three definite phases. This may seem unbelievable to many but after the last war — World War No. 1 — there were much more people on relief than any single year during the height of depression in our country. After the last war, there was a great epidemic of suicide. All these problems had to be faced after the last war when only four and one half million veterans returned after 18 months of war, but we must remember that after the present conflict, there will be fourteen and one-half million veterans returning, some of them after three, four, five, six or even seven years of war. Someone characterized the situation after the last war in this manner. Someone before he committed suicide penned this note of farewell. He wrote, “I am tired of living. I am tired of going from wife to wife, home to home, country to country to amuse myself 24 hours a day.” Yes, the problem of helping the veterans of this war to readjust themselves in a changed world is one of the greatest problems that we must all face. The problem must be faced by the parents, the wives of returning veterans. Yes, the problem must be faced by the church. The problem must be faced by many social welfare institutions dedicated to the task of helping to readjust these veterans. We must never refer to these veterans as problems in the community. No, not by any means. They are not problems, but they have problems that must be solved. Their problems will be great indeed, and our problems will seem so small and so insignificant in comparison to their problems. With an honest, sympathetic understanding, with the knowledge of what each returning veteran is entitled to from his government and from his community, with a sympathetic knowledge and appreciation for the things that he has done for us, and the things that he has fought for, we can make very great and very important steps in aiding him to readjust himself to civilian life. These are the tasks with which are all faced. Let us be aware of these problems and let us study these problems intelligently in order that we might all participate in the task of readjusting the returning veteran. I can imagine no service more beautiful than this that we can render to our beloved boys. XXI. ZSOLTÁR Uram, a te erősségedben Örvend a koronás király, Ujjong segítő hatalmadnak, Amint népe között kiáll. Betöltötted szívének vágyát, Megadtad, mit kért ajaka, Áldásodat eléje vitted, Mind kegyelmed gazdag java. Szín-aranyból van koronája, Mit szent kezed fejére tett, Hosszú időt kért és te adtál Örökkévaló életet. Dicsősége te általad nagy, Fény, méltóság öltözete, Az ő szívének vidámsága A te szent színed öröme.
