16 TESTVÉRISÉG KOSSUTH The war which friends of freedom wage ’Gainst wrongful power and tyrants rage, Is older far than history’s page. Detested are the names of those Who dared the cause of right oppose, And stood, of man and truth the foes. But ever is their memory blest Who in the fight have sought to wrest The tyrant’s power and free the oppressed. What though the wrong thou didst assail O’er justice for a space prevail, And hope grow dim and courage fail? Kossuth! untouched by fear of shame, The muse of history writes thy name On the long scroll inscribed to fame. Blazoned in characters of light That name shall shine thro’ slavery’s night, Till freedom triumph in its might. Thou hast not failed! the holy cause Of human rights, of equal laws, Kew life from the example draws. Thou yet prolonged foul falsehood’s reign, That life matured shall show how vain The coward’s scourge, the tyrant’s chain. Quenched for a time, the smouldering fire Kindled by thee, shall blaze in ire, And thrones shall in its flames expire. The hangman’s cord, the vile garrotte, May clasp indeed the patroit’s throat — Her champions kill — hut Freedom not! For each, whose thread of life is riven For each, like thee, to exile driven, Shall thousands to her cause be given. There shall fair Freedom teach to wield Her “gory anlace” in the field Till every form of slavery yield. Yes, Kossuth! ere thy sands have run, The conflict which thou hast begun Shall be renewed, perchance be won. Our fathers fought as Magyars fight — Have gained, as these shall gain, their right, When truth prevailing, gives them might.
