SAXICOLA AURITA AND MELANOLEUCA IN THE HUNGARIAN ORNIS. 4-79 ted. To attain this object I went in the beginning of June to Zágráb, where Mr. SPIRIDION BRUSINA, director of the Museum of Zágráb, left the whole collection to my disposal. The Saxicola melanoleuca and Saxicola ciurita is largely represented in that Museum and most of the specimens are originating from the Hungarian Littoral. There are adults in spring and autumn plumage and young ones in first plumage. My attention was specially captured by an adult male Black-throated Chat, whose head, back and belly were already suffused with buff, the wings deep black broadly margined with buff. This specimen originates from the environs of Fiume dated August the 24^ 1888. Besides these there are nine others from the same locality and of the same dates; among which I noticed a young in nest-plumage from the 28 ui August and two adults, collected on the 171 and 23' 1 April, both in intact autumn plumage only the wing and tailfeathers worn off a little. Of the Black-eared Chat (S'aaicola aurita, TEMM.) there are also several Hungarian specimens originating from Fiume and collected in August and September, most of which in first plumage. Finally I ought to mention, that not only that specimen of the Blackeared Chat, which I collected at Novi, but also most of the adult males contained in the Zágráb collection are nearly identical in plumage to the form, which O TTMAR BEISER* restitutes as a good species under the name of Saxicola ampJiileuca HEMPR. & EHRB. According to my opinion the Saxicola ampJiileuca is to be decidedly considered as a synonym of the Saxicola aurita TEMM. because it is only a state of coloration, du to the wearing off of the feathers. * Materialien zu einer Ornis Balcanica II. p. 40.
