Working out of doors with one’s hands is one of the most helpful things that a depressed or sorrowing person can do. It was a wise physician who said to a broken-hearted friend: “Start a garden in your back yard and work in it every day especially when you are upset.” Working in the friendly earth, watching the seeds sprout and the plants grow and bear fruit — such things bring us nearer to God and are medicine for the heart and mind.
