TÁROGATÓ 13 YOUR DUTY When little children try to shirk From doing any honest work And always have a good excuse If asked to be of any use, They’ll find the lazy habit grow As nearly all the elders know. And very likely hard to break Though one may lots of trouble take. So, start today, and do your bit. I’m sure you will be glad of it. —Fanny Allen. THE CROWNING VICTORY Man in this moment of his history has emerged in greater supremacy over the forces of Nature than has even been dreamed of before. He has it in his power to solve quite easily the problems of material existence. He has conquered the wild beasts, and he has even conquered the insects and the microbes. There lies before him, if he wishes, a golden age of peace and progress. All is in his hand. He has orüy to conquer his last and worst enemy—himself. With vision, faith, and courage, it may still be within our power to win a crowning victory for all. —Winston Churchill. LIGHTING THE WORLD Christ’s words to his disciples, “Ye are the light of the world”, seem to mean more today than ever before. If ever this dimly-lighted world needed light, it needs it today, and the Church of Jesus Christ must provide that light. We realize that it needs extraordinary expenditure of energy to light the world, and this applies to spiritual light as well as to natural light. The Church must provide sufficient energy to make the world blaze with holy light and each Christian should light and each Christian should contribute his share. We spend enormous amounts of energy in heaping up riches, but we spend very much less in lighting this dark world. It is not altogether a matter of money, although that cannot be neglected; but the soul must be afire with God if we are to light the world. It needs prayer; but the chief matter is that soul shall be alive with holy energy, each day in touch with God. “Ye are the light of the world.” Are we failing to let the light shine so that all men may see it and glorify God? MORE ABOUT THE CONVENTION “By what other single method has the Christian Church been able to bring so many people to the full commitment of their lives to Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, as through the Sunday School Movement, since it was organized by Robert Raikes one hundred and seventy years ago?” asks a prominent Christian leader. No one hesitates to agree that the Sunday School is a great agency for Christian teaching, but we often forget that it is also a great instrument for evangelism. The theme of the Mid- Century World Convention to be held in Toronto, August 10th to 16th, is “Jesus Christ, Teacher and Lord”, thus emphasizing the evangelistic as well as the teaching function of the Sunday School. Many delegates from the newer of the overseas mission fields will be able to bear witness that Christianity did not really take root in their countries until the missionaries built schools and began the great work of Christian Education among the youth of the land. Five thousand delegates from seventyfour countries are planning to be present at Toronto in August to salute Jesus Christ as “Teacher and Lord.” Many of these will be Sunday School workers in countries where the missionaries laid the foundations of the Christian Education programme.
