DECEMBER, 1950. The word “carol” signifies joy, that is why at the Christmas season particularly, we find people of every race singing carols. The first real Christmas carol is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi who made the Bethlehem manger to help tell his people the Christmas story. The story goes that when he was finished he was so happy, he sang for joy, and that was the beginning of Christmas carolling. Since that time the custom has grown until it embraces people of many countries. The world would be a poorer place if the joyous carols were not sung. Since the early carols written in the sixteenth century, song writers have increased the Christmas literature, so that we have beautiful music for every kind of holiday mood.
