+ JANUARY, 1947. HAPPINESS DOES NOT MEAN FREEDOM It has been well said that the happy people of the world are never free. Only youth wants freedom, or those who really refuse to live, since to live is to suffer. The older and wiser we grow the more it is borne in upon us that nothing is of value unless it is shared. The man who refuses to bear his brother’s burden, need never expect happiness. It remains true as our Lord said long ago, that he who tries to save his life loses it, and the man who deliberately places his shoulder under his brother’s burden saves himself while he is saving his brother. The law of burdenbearing is the law of Christ, and it is the wisest law ever made. He whose shoulder bends lowest beneath his brother’s burden will Und the sweetest song echoing through his heart as he treads in the footsteps of his Lord.
