A Canadian Magyar Monthly for the enlightenment and entertainment of Hungarians, edited by Dr. A. Czakó, published by The United Church oj Canada. Sixth year, No. 3. September, 1943. CONTENTS. A new slogan—not any better than the old “opiate for the people” — regards religion as a sort of escape from reality. Our first article tries to show why this opinion betrays all the signs of non-thinking. — Another article deals with the idea of fatherland; this idea has only one meaning for the natives of any country but what about us who were born in Hungary and have acquired Canadian or United States citizenship? Our article is more than a theoretical discussion; it tries to answer the problem: how can we serve Canada best. In the NOTES three Hungarians are dealt with: Béla Lugosi, the well-known film star (“Dracula”) who fights with great energy for democracy and Hungarian democracy in particular under the leadership of Count MicJjael KÁROLYI; Nicholas Hornyánszky, the famous Toronto artist who sent a fine painting to the heroes of Leningrad; and Joseph Balogh who wrote a remarkable book against Fascism. — The war has brought a great change in the general attitude toward religion as witnessed by the writings of Rickenbaeker, Whittaker and Colonel Scott, and also by the three latest best sellers, Cronin, Lloyd C. Douglas and Franz Werfel. Our note tells one or two things about them. — Although we have written very often on vitamins and necessary minerals we have summed up again all the food-sources of these lifefactors. — And Old Story from an Old World tells us about the voluntary white slavery among the Tsherkes people in the middle of the last century as described by one of our famous Hungarian emigrants. — There are a few notes on interesting and valuable recently—issued stamps. We bring a further instalment of Alexander Finta’s poem, SANKÓ, and of the NOTES TO THE TRAGEDY OF MAN by the editor. ★ ★ ★ GOD S4 VE THE KING. The editor’s book: Don Quixote, A Commentary, dealing wi h the theory of the world and life, has been published. Price $1.50 for bound copies, $1.00 for paper bound ones. Order from Dr. A.
