\ July-August, 1941 GARDENS HUMMER brings thoughts of beautiful gardens we have known. Memory goes back, perhaps across to the Old Land, to a garden we knew when very young, where lilacs bloomed and moss roses grew, and the scent of musk perfumed the air. Neither time nor distance can erase the memory of the quiet beauty of that garden plot, shut off from the public. It was a place where one could rest and relax. The mind has been likened to a garden where we can walk at will when the world has been shut out. There too, we can recapture memories of beauty and fragrance. Plutarch has said, “For as shrubs which are cut down with the morning dew upon them do for a long time retain their fragrance, so the good actions of a wise man perfume his mind, and leave a rich scent behind them.” BOARD OF HOME MISSIONS, The United Church of Canada Wesley Buildings, 299 Queen Street West, Toronto 2, Ont.
