nomic elite' for people with the greatest wealth and income. The study also discusses their social status, professions and their role in the local economy. Anna Cserna: The City's bureau As the county-seat became a municipality again, expectations regarding the city's development became high. The task of living up to these expectations fell on the city bureau and on the always optimistic and able to act staff of officers. The author wrote up the history of Szekszárd' s city bureau and council. A typical city of the Hungarian public administration at the time was a 'city with orderly council', which was under the jurisdiction of the county. The rights of self-government related to the settlement's own affairs were practiced by the municipal corporation, while the administrative duties were carried out by a council supported by an official staff. The author introduced the administrative system and the officer hierarchy including details about the competence. By looking at the bureau's activities it is easy to follow how the settlement developed into a city led by a number of provident majors. The archontological part of the study comprises the names of city honors, officers and other employees including their time spent in office. Attila Major: Electrification in Szekszárd Parallel to the national trend, the demand for private and public lighting in Szekszárd increased on the turn of the 19 1 century. The study presents the efforts made by the leaders of the settlement to introduce new expressions and to help understand the new technology in order to be able to choose the best alternative. The writer describes the development and operation of the electric system and in addition he gives much useful information related to the subject.
