duction of fruit. Advocates of pomology are well-aware that the triangle between the Őrség, Hetés and Göc­sej regions is a treasure trove of traditional Hungar­ian varieties of fruit trees. These fruit tree varieties are renowned for their bountiful yields and resistance to different pests and diseases, which has prolonged their life-cycles and made them easier to care for. The fruits of these trees have outstanding physical char­acteristics and may be used for a variety of purpos­es. The different varieties of fruit trees abounded at one time in the Őrség region. People living there had different varieties for every-day consumption, desic­cation, jam and vinegar making and pálinka distilla­tion. The most popular fruits were apples, pears and plums. Of the different apple varieties people pre­ferred the Mosánszki, Vas County apple, Scone apple, Pumpkin apple, Bosom apple, Darás apple, Rye apple, Wheat apple, Szentivány apple, and the Mouse apple varieties. Of the pear varieties the most popular ones included the Oat pear, Rye pear, Prickly pear, Salt­ing pear, Emperor’s pear, Hébér pear, Lómonyu pear, Scone pear, Golden pear, and Black pear. The most popular fruit tree, however, has always been the plum tree, which has a range of important uses such as desiccation, jam-making and pálinka dis­tillation. Whereas pears and apples must always be grafted, plum trees are self-fruitful trees. The people in the region were familiar with and used the Opal plum, Wheat plum, Yellow plum, Crow plum, Long plum, and Duránczi plum. Several beautiful old fruit trees can still be seen today in Domonkosfa. The South-facing hills of the village are especially well­­equipped to foster fruit farming. There may not even be any houses in the village that are not surrounded by fruit orchards, and the people there still prefer to have at least seven plum trees in their garden.
