Language usage and written text creating in the bilingual PREKMURJE My thesis explores the relationship between language use and writing in the bilingual Muravidék. In June 2007,1 carried out a research within the 9th grade students of I. Számú Lendvai Kétnyelvű Általános Iskola (Bilingual Elementary School in Lendava) in Slovenia, analyzing on the one hand a class that studies Hungarian Language as mother tongue, on the other and, a class that studies Hungarian as a second language. I prepared complex test-sheets that aimed to measure textual understanding, writing abilities, and communication skills. In the Hungarian native language class, based on O. Nagy Gábor’s book titled Mi fán terem?, students received an explication of an idiomatic expression, and after reading the text, they were given the task to elaborate on and answer the given questions. The assignment was followed by writing (v. “syntactic creativity”) tasks. In the Hungarian as a second language class, the emphasis was primarily laid on communication skills: in this group I examined the correctness of sound pronunciation, lexical borrowings and the dialectal elements of Muravidék, with a special focus on linguistic contacts between the two languages. I compared my results with two other control groups: the 1st group included the 8th grade students of János Arany Általános Iskola (Elementary School) in Lenti (Hungary), the 2nd group included the 9th graders of Raoul Wallenberg Humán Szakképző Iskola és Gimnázium (Vocational Secondary School). 169
