V5V 4e6 May 13th, 1977 The Honourable Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, Parliament Buildings, Ottawa, Ontario Dear Mr. Prime Minister: We are writing to you, Mr. Prime Minister, on behalf of the more than ten thousand Hungarian-Canadians now living in British Columbia. We ask that you intervene at the Belgrade Conference on behalf of the Hungarian minority now living in Rumania, in the execution of the Helsinki Agreément, After World War I a territory of 103.903 square kilometres was taken from Hungary and annexed by Rumania. By this annexation more than 3 million Hungarians came under Rumanian domination. Most o£ these Hungarians were living in a "Hungarian Autonomy", that is to say, they were granted Hungarian language and education rights. Already between the two World Wars, the forced amalgamation had begun. After the Second World War, the oppression and "rumanization" became more cruel. The present government, led by Ceausesou, is only communist in its economic aspect, but on a social level it is wildly nationalistic. Its aim of exterminating the Hungarian minority is an open secret. Hundreds of Hungarians are jailed on trumped-up charges. On a "Workers Exchange" scheme thousands are deported to the interior of Rumania. Their houses and worldly goods are being confiscated and in place of the transported Hungarians, Rumanians are being settled in. Old Hungarian Universities and centuries old Hungarian castles are being demolished. There are no Hungarian street signs in ancient Hungarian cities and villages. In elementary and secondary schools, with a few exceptions, the teaching languages is exclusively Rumanian. The world renowned "Bolyai" University was merged with the Rumanian "Babes" University. A percentage system was introduced for university entrance and with this system they are impeding the education of the Hungarian youth. In recent years the number of Hungarian students has been reduced by one-third. In schools Rumanian national history is being taught exclusively. It is forbidden to speak of the Hungarian past. In cemeteries, crypts are being painted over and crosses are exchanged, so that not even the names of the deceased should remind one of the thousand year old Hungarian past. By official order, historical relics and ancient inscriptions are being collected and registries of births, deaths and marriages are being confiscated from cities and villages. On streets or public places, it is advisable to speak Hungarian only in whispers. In restaurants it is common to see the sign "It is prohibited to sing in Hungarian here". The Hungarian newspaper and publishings contain 50$ communist propaganda, 25$ of translations of works of Rumanian writers, and 25$ of material dealing with agricultural or social matters. Hungarian historical novels do not appear at all. The discriminatory governmental orders are humiliating. For example: Tourists of Hungarian descent are only allowed to stay in hotels. For their Hungarian relatives it is dangerous to even meet them. We could list the humiliations, intimidations and cruelties on pages and pages, but we believe that what we have already said is sufficient proof that the minority of millions of Hungarians living in Rumania is hindered in exercising their fundamental human rights. The attitude of the Rumanian government towards the minority contravenes the basic obligatory agreement of the Paris Peace Treaty, as well as the Helsinki Agreement. You, Mr. Prime Minister, once stated that to forbid a people the use of its language was like taking away its air to breathe, as if to suffocate them. The air has indeed been taken away from the Hungarian-Rumanian minority, but they are not only suffocating mentally and spiritually, but also physically. Canada has always been known to defend the rights of the people, but this has especially been evident during your regime. All Hungarian-Canadians wholeheartedly await the intervention of the Canadian Government on behalf i.i the Hungarian-Rumanian minority at the Belgrade Conference. If this should be the case, then you, Mr. Prime Minister, can be certain of the thanks and loyalty of the Hungarian-Canadians. Yours very truly, VANCOUVER TRANSYLVANIAN FEDERATION Per: HUNGARY IN EARLY 1848: ' THE CONS TITUTIONAL STRUGGLE AGAINST ABSOLUTISM IN CONTEMPORARY EYES EDSEL WALTER STROUP ' Foreword by SI EVI N Bfl.A VARDY After many years of fruitful research Professor Edsel Walter Stroup, (University of Akron, Ohio) published his 26 page book titled: HUNGARY IN EARLY 1848: The Constitutional Struggle Against A bsolutism in Contemporary Eyes. This handsome book was edited by the State University of New York at Buffalo in conjunction with the Hungarian Cultural Foundation and was printed by Classic Printing Corp. in Cleveland, Ohio. Few books have appeared that analyze history from a view point akin to the Hungarian heart beat in the service of truth, but this book promises to be a significant source of material both for serious researcher and student alike in that this 11 chapter book contains 30 pages of bibliography, a 12 page index, 21 illustrations, and 569 footnotes. Yet it is also interesting reading for the popular taste. Professor Stroup informs the reader about the months that preceeded the great popular Magyar Freedomfight of 1848. The book’s cover design was created by Magda Bárány (Cleveland, Ohio) and the introduction was written by Professor S. Béla Várdy (Duquesne University). Every Hungarian who loves his country should express his gratitude to this Hungarophile writer by ordering and disseminating his book which may be ordered from: HUNGARIAN CULTURAL FOUNDATION P. O. Arab Interests More than a half-million Arabs decided to visit London, England during the week of the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. of Hanover. They also have a Moslem Mosque in London. The Arab tycoons seem to favor London as their European city where they can have their shopping sprees, frequent nightclubs or get European-type health care. In the USA the Arab money-men picked Houston in the state of Texas as their favorite business ground. Half of the seven billion dollars of annual business that flows between the USA private sectors and the Arab states is transacted through Houston located companies. What New York is for the Jews both spiritually and monetarily so is the city of Houston for the Arab interests. The Texan experience and know-how of finding, purifying and selling oil made the oil rich Arabs a reality. So naturally they feel at home in Houston.
