The ideals of representative government and of democracy are upheld by a new generation that has grown to maturity during the last three decades. It is this generation of which I am a member. It is my contemporaries who are assuming more and more significant positions of leadership in Hungary, a generation that will eventually govern Hungary. It is immensely important that the United States favorably settle the question of the Crown once and for all and thereby win the favor of an important generation of Hungarians in Hungary. A decision to return the Crown to the Hungarian people would indeed be very popular in Hungary and would restore faith in the generosity of the United States. For the Government of the United States possessing the Hungarian Crown does not represent any political, military or economic advantage, and its return to the Hungarian people will in no way influence the lives of Americans. It is, therefore, a diplomatic question that need to be resolved. Finally, returning the Hungarian Crown to the Hungarian people would be a just decision. It would clearly indicate to the world that the Government of the United States wants to settle all possible outstanding issues, not only with the large and strong nations but also with small nations whose needs and rights are not less important than those of the powerfull and great. I applaud your decision, Sir, and support your current efforts to return the Hungarian Crown to the Hungarian people. It is the right decision because it is just. A második világháború befejeztével a magyar korona az Egyesült Államok tulajdonába került, és azóta is az Önök kormánya őrzi. Bár a korona magyar tulajdonba való visszaszolgáltatásának kérdése folyamatosan napirenden volt, több diplomáciai és politikai okból nem került sor végleges döntéshozatalra ebben az ügyben. Ha jól értettem, Ön felülvizsgálta ezt a kérdést, és úgy döntött, hogy a koronát vissza kell adni a magyar népnek. Ez a bölcs döntés nagy fontosságú és igazságossága miatt elismerést érdemel. A második világháború után az Egyesült Államok és a Magyar Népköztársaság kormánya között fennálló vitás kérdések legtöbbje rendeződött. A két kormány rendszeres és teljes diplomáciai kapcsolatot tart fenn egymással, amelyet kulturális és kereskedelmi megállapodások egészítenek ki. Úgy tűnik, hogy az egyetlen, mind a mai napig rendezetlen jelentősebb kérdés a korona kérdése. 458
