The determining prognostic factors of visual outcome Attila Vajas University of Debrecen, Medical and Health Science Centre, Department of Ophthalmology, Hungary Epiretinai membranes (ERM) have been called a variety of names, including cellophane maculopathy, preretinal macular gliosis, preretinal macular fibrosis and macular pucker. This ocular pathology is a relatively common entity, occurring in about 7-20% of the population. These membranes are avascular, fibrocellular tissues that proliferate on the surface of the retina and can lead to metamorphopsia and varying degrees of visual changes. ERMs can be associated with a variety of ocular conditions, such as posterior vitreous detachments, vitreomacular tractions, retina! detachment surgery, retinal vascular occlusive diseases, ocular inflammatory diseases, and diabetes mellitus. However, a large proportion of ERMs does not occur in the context of any associated disease or known medical history. Surgical treatment of ERM is a common method but not all epiretinai membranes require treatment. During the course, the author discusses the surgical needs and possibilities, the advantages and disadvantages of different vitaI dyes used during the surgery. The factors, which has known, or hypothetical impact on the postoperative visual acuity, will also be analyzed.
