Neurothrophic defect of corneal epithel caused by unknown neuropathy Katalin Erdősné Markó, Agnes Füst, László Imre Semmelweis University, Budapest, Г' Departement of Opthalmology In this presentation a rare neurotrophic keratopathy is going to be our topic. A patient suffering from blurred vision and pain around the eyes for two months visited our Clinic with previous diagnosis of corneal ulceration or corneal degeneration. At the first examination the best corrected visual acuity was 0.4 on both sides. Epithelial haze and puctated surface were found on both corneas. Corneal sensitivity was decreased on both sides. Based on these signs we tought of neurotrophic epitheliopathy. In the general history no disease causing neuropathy was found. Our patient suffered however from a hereditary sensory neuropathy, that presented itself in other, systemic symptoms as well. On the ground of our diagnosis the lubrication and care of the cornea was our primary goal in the treatment. One month later the state of the cornea and the visual acuity was significantly better, best corrected visual acuity was 0.8 on both sides - and this remained so at the further examinations as well. As a conclusion it has to be emphasized that in the case of binocular corneal pathology that doesn't react to treatment the general history has to be asked in detail and corneal sensitivity has to be examined. In the treatment of neurothropic keratopathy corneal care by lubrication and discontinuation of eyedrops containing toxic preservative material has the key role.
