and 96 controls. Also, the frequency of the polymorphism was determined in a Romany population of 140 individuals.

Frequency of the risk allele was 0.54 among patients, 0.33 among controls and 0.34 in the Romany population. Individuals homozygous for the risk allele have a 7.5-fold increased likelihood of early AMD (95% Cl 2.9 to 19) and a 10.9-fold (95% Cl: 2,9-19,1) increased risk for late AMD. No correlation was found between the disease and heterozygosity for the Y402H polymorphism.

Based on the findings homozygosity for the Y402H polymorphism of the CFH gene is an important risk factor for both early and late AMD in Hungary. The risk of progression to late AMD is also influenced by the polymorphism. Frequency of the risk allele was found to be nearly equal in controls and the Romany population. Genotyping of the polymorphism may have importance in clinical practice.
