230 Szemészet Reaching for the sk-eye: The story of ophthalmology in a suburban hospital Kerényi Á., Bencsik R., István Váry I. Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Hospital, Budapest The institution known today as the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Hospital was initially planned as a hospice. However when inaugurated in 1932, under the name of the Miklós Horthy Community Hospital, it began work as an active hospital, treating patients from the local Kőbánya district of Budapest. Originally a part of the Szent István Hospital, it became independent in 1950. In 1972, it was designated main hospital for the district. Prior to 1972, the hospital did not have a resident ophthalmologist; but at this time Dr. István Váry was appointed as Senior Doctor. Previously assistant professor at the 2nd Department of Ophthalmology of the Budapest Semmelweis University, he began work as an ophthalmic consultant. He soon got the opportunity to carry out operations and treat inpatients in the ENT department. Due to the growing demand, a separate ophthalmic department, with its own operating theatre, was set up in 1983. Dr. Váry’s ophthalmic work was of a high standard, and covered an unusually wide range in the fields of eyelid, strabismus, and anterior segment surgery. Váry retired in 1983, and was succeeded as head of department by Dr. Rózsa Bencsik. She organised a night-duty system, and broadened the profile of the department, introducing several new, state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic methods. This became one of the leading ophthalmic departments in Budapest. Since the end of 1999, the department has been under the leadership of its third head. The history of our department is a success story: in 30 years, hard work, vocation and humility towards the profession have created, starting from nothing, a well-functioning, modern ophthalmic department.
