140. évfolyam (2003) Supplementum 1. 113 Ophthalmological consequences of carotid-cavernosus fistulas PÓSÁN G.,1. KOROMPAI K.,1 VÁRHEGYI ZS.,1 LÁZÁR I.2 B.-A.-Z. County Hospital, Ophthalmic Department, Miskolc B.-A.-Z. County Hospital, Radiology Department, Miskolc Aim: To give a summary of the ophthalmological consequences of carotid-cavernosus fistulas, from our patients’ data. We present an especially instructive case. Method: In the last year we have investigated three patients whose ophthalmological signs were caused by carotidcavernosus fistulas. The development of symptoms however is dependent on the particular character of the fistula, which can make initial diagnosis difficult. In some cases we arrived at the correct result only with the help of a DSA examination. Results: One patient was treated in the National Institute of Neurosurgery. The second was treated in the Radiology Department of our hospital by arterial embolisation, while in the third case the shunt closed spontaneously. All three patients recovered. Conclusion: The ophthalmologist can play an important role in the recognition of this disease, but its treatment lies within the specialities of the neurosurgeon and radiologist. 30 August 2003 Posters
