Ornamental Roof Tiles from the Nyiko Region Functionality and estheticism have always played similarly important roles in the folk architecture. A house was always designed for families to live their lives in it. Just the same, they had always been carefully designed to be aesthetically pleasing. Even the poorest of the farmer households had their specific ornamental system. The use or omission of these systems carried significant meanings. Very often, ornaments were applied at not very visible spots, for example on the roof. The rural communities in the Nyiko region had a very specific architectural style. They even used elements that are only to be found here. An important example of this style is the ornament on the roof tiles. Most of the roof tiles listed in the catalogue belong to the István Molnár Museum of Szekelykeresztur (Cristuru Secuiesc). In 1996 a house from Tarcsafalva, a bakery from Rugonfalva and a barn and a pig's house from Csehetfalva were moved to the museum yard. As they were being pulled down, many ornamental roof tiles had been found. These contained inscriptions, year indications, scratched figures and flowers. They were produced in the local roof manufactures, most of them - according to the origin of these houses, in the workshop/factory in Csehetfalva. The pieces produced in the different historical periods are easily discernible. The work of the different masters, with their unique technique is also easily identifiable. The main value of the collection is its uniqueness. The theme has never been dealt with in the studies about folk architecture. The study preceding the presentation of the roof tiles, examines the objects with their own specific social and economical background. 38
