Muzeul Haáz Rezső din Odorheiu Secuiesc este muzeul de istorie locală, de etnografie, de artă si de ştiinţele naturii al zonei ce cuprinde fostul scaun Odorheiu, în coltul estic al Transilvaniei. Aria sa de activitate (în actualul judeţ Harghita) începe de la versanta apuseană a Masivului Harghita, întinzându-se pe un teritoriu al cărui locuitori sunt aproape în exclusivitate secui, adică maghiari stabiliţi în regiunea de la periferia estică a Bazinului Carpatic. Bazele Muzeului au fost aşezate prin colecţiile colegiului reformat din localitate, al căror prim inventar a fost efectuat în 1797 de profesorul Zilahi Sebes János. Prin urmare, alături de colecţia muzeală a colegiului din Aiud (1796), Odorheiul adăposteşte una din cele mai vechi colecţii de acest gen din Transilvania. De-alungul istoriei sale zbuciumată această colecţie a avut mult de suferit (în timpul revoluţiei din 1848-49, a primului război mondial), dar de fiecare dată inimoşii profesori ai colegiului ajutati de elevii lor au reuşit să-i suplinească golurile si să-i asigure continuitatea dezvoltării. In vechea colecţie a scolii alături de bibliotecă figurau monezi, blazoane, portrete, arme, precum si o serie de curiozităţi. în primii ani ai secolului XX. profesorul Haáz Rezső a început să colecţioneze si obiecte de interes etnografic, deschizând în anul 1913 în clădirea veche a colegiului reformat prima expoziţie publică de etnografie. In urma etatizării şcolilor confesionale (1948) în 1952 colecţia muzeală a colegiul a devenit instituţie de stat de sine stătătoare. Această schimbare nu a putut genera o dezvoltare spectaculoasă din cauza lipsei de fonduri materiale, precum si a politicii culturale din epocă, rezumabilă prin formula: „cultură = propagandă de partid”. După 1989 îngrădirile ideologice au dispărut, dar lipsa acută de fonduri persistă. Această situaţie a făcut necesară înfiinţarea Asociaţiei Culturale Haáz Rezső, ca instituţie civilă neguvemamentală, menită să sprijine funcţionarea Muzeului. The Haáz Rezső Museum of Odorheiu Secuiesc is the museum of local history, folklore, art and natural history of the old chair of Udvarhely (Odorhei) situated in the eastern part of Transylvania. The area of collection (in what is today the counmity of Harghita) is situated to the north of the Harghita ranges, a region whose inhabitants are almost exclusively Seclers — who represent a group of the Hungarian nation living on the eastern border of the Carpathian plateau. The museum was bom out of the collections of the old reformed college. Its first inventary was made in 1797 by Zilahi Sebes János, professor of the College. Next to the collections of the museum of the reformed College of Nagyenyed (Aiud), this is one of the oldest similar collections of Transylvania. Besides the library of the old school collection, the museum also includes a large member of coins, coats-of-arm, portraits, weapons and curiosities. At the turn of the century Haáz Rezső — who tought drawing — began to collect folk objects and in 1913 he organised the first public folklore exhibition in the college building. After 1948, when the state took over the church-owned schools, this school collection became an independent state institution. This didn’t mean that it underwent a rapid developement — this was hindered by a constant lack of funds and by the official state policy which can be briefly characterized with the following equation: culture = party propaganda. After 1989 the ideological restrictions dissapeared — not so the lack of funds. The Haáz Rezső Cultural Association was founded to help the museum which is an independent isntitulion now, not belonging to the state. 16
