Volume 38 Spring 2010 SUCCESSFUL YEARS By the grace of God the Hungarian Democratic Association of Romania, the RMDSZ, was able to celebrate its 20th Anniversary. The event was celebrated in the presence of several ministers, governors and their deputies in a never before experienced numbers, and under international admiration for a small party and small national minority which can assure the stability of the entire country. It was indeed an enormous success. And yet, was it indeed such a great success? Yes, it was indeed. We can only congratulate the party leaders, who brought to victory the political policy of small minority parties that helps them to participates in the ruling majority and if possible influences its strategy and guaranties the stability of an otherwise unstable state. And at the same time to enable the majority nation to acknowledge the existence of the minority and to become familiar with its qualities. Being an Anniversary, I would rather think and remember our situation 20 years ago. I want to think of that moment when our nation after fifty years of submission and humiliation was able to regain its national identity and dignity as true human beings and Hungarians instantly. I recall the day when hundreds of people were lining up with great hope before the offices of the two Hungarian parties, the RMDSZ and the MADISZ to register for membership. And I remember the first visit of Bishop László Tokes, who came to participate in the council of our leaders. We almost felt, how the city, the county and the whole nation was anticipating the new decisions concerning the future course of the entire state. And then I recall the first ecumenical service and the gatherings at the old county house, and the first March the 15th Celebration, when our people became once again a nation, whose integrity and dignity can never be questioned. This was the atmosphere in which the RMDSZ was bom in Transylvania, in Partium, in Banat and in the whole Romania. It was brought about under the sense of unity and completeness. The aim was that this association would bring together all people who call themselves Hungarian under the idea of unity and completeness, in order that we might not relapse into a state of vegetation. We were hoping that our political attitude will not fall back into a simple interest protection, which is nothing else but tattered pan-handling. (I know that this is a summery judgment of those persons, who practiced it, and gave sometimes their life in its pursuit, but in political life only the authentic success can warrant such a course.) The RMDSZ wanted to become such an association, which under the sense of completeness organizes and represents in demoMarton Gajzago cratic fashions all Hungarians in Transylvania and Romania, and creates for them such living conditions in which they can live as Hungarians. As a consequence, it wanted to become the autonomy organization of the Hungarians in Romania. And this is true even if the original documents are not mentioning it. At that time it was impossible to formulate it in detail, because the time was short, and some authors did not want to hurt the sensibilities of the Romanians. The issue was closed with the idea that in the future we will describe it in full. It is also true that the old tattered pan-handling attitude also played a role. This was the manner, how we talked about these problems and contemplated about its formulation. This is what the RMDSZ meant, when it described itself as an interest protection institution. And indeed, under a new leadership it brought up the issue to describe itself as the autonomy association. However this formulation never became clearly expressed. UNITY AND INTEREST PROTECTION However, the RMDSZ never defined itself. It was hiding in the comer and maintained, (in order to avoid the expression autonomy), that it is not a political party but only an interest protection organi-Page 1
