ORDASI ÁGNES THE FIUME ELITE GROUPS AND THE DILEMMAS OF THE BOSNIAN RAILWAY LINE IN THE DUALIST ERA By Agnes Ordasi SUMMARY Fiume (Rijeka), the only seaport of the Kingdom of Hungary, played a prominent role in the country’s foreign trade and economy, so its development opportunities were intertwined with the issue of railway construction from the first quarter of the 19th century. Although the Budapest-Fiume rail link was finally completed by 1873, other line concepts were also considered to facilitate access to the maritime and Balkan regions, which were closely linked to the geostrategic position of the port city, and equally closely concerned the local elite groups. Of the concepts considered, the present paper explores the dilemmas connected to the building of a ’Bosnian railway’. On the one hand, it looks for the arguments that were proposed for and against the creation of a railway line at local, national and imperial levels. On the other hand, it shows when, how and to what extent different priorities intersected, and when, how and to what extent the influential elite circles in Fiume were able to lobby. 536
