APPONYI GYÖRGY 1872-ES KÍSÉRLETE EGY KATOLIKUS KONZERVATÍV PÁRT ALAPÍTÁSÁRA THE ATTEMPT OF GYÖRGY APPONYI TO CREATE A CATHOLIC CONSERVATIVE PARTY IN 1872 By Szilvia Czinege SUMMARY Following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, the political program of György Apponyi focused on preserving the rights and position of the Catholic Church. In order to achieve his goal, he wanted to found a confessional party, for which he also tried to organise a social base: at the end of 1871 he became president of the Catholic Political Casino in Pressburg, and in March 1872 he launched there his newspaper called Der Katholik. His activities were supported by Archbishop János Simor of Esztergom, with whom Apponyi maintained a lively correspondence in 1872. After the election failure, the intention of founding a party was pushed to the background, and the idea of keeping the idea alive came to the fore, that is, the maintenance of his journal Der Katholik, which was published from 1874 until June 1879 under the title Das Recht. The failure to found the party had several components: the peculiarities of domestic politics, geographical factors and the lack of a social base, as well as Apponyi’ s character, all contributed. 501
