SZÁSZ HUNOR REMARKS ON THE HISTORY OF THE JUDICIAL INSTITUTIONS OF THE SZÉKELY SEATS IN THE 18th CENTURY The Case of Csík Seat between 1708 and 1780 By Hunor Szász SUMMARY Before 1764, the judicial apparatus of the Székely seats was a two-tiered system, based on the first instance of the vice-seat and the second instance of the derék-szat. This system, as well as the legal framework and the litigation that constituted its content, was considered obsolete from the point of view of enlightened absolutism, as it hindered the unification and efficiency of administration and jurisdiction. The years 1763-1764 were a turning point, when, in accordance with the imperial government’s desire for reform, the socalled permanent or continuous boards were set up. In my study, I examine the judicial institutions of Csík Seat, mainly on the basis of primary, hitherto unexplored archival sources. The focus of my research is on the functioning, development and personnel of these institutions, as well as on their relations with central authority and their social aspects. 470
