But the commercial upswing was accompanied by another huge threat: the bubonic plague. This threat functioned as a catalyst in reshaping the “Military Cordon” into a “Sanitary Cordon”. The paper offers insights into the ways in which the Viennese Court protected the Monarchy from the infectious disease already at the external border of the Habsburg Empire by erecting a “medicalised border”. In addition, it shows how a chain of permanently installed quarantine stations {Contumazen) at the most important border crossing transport routes became the key element of an early modern state policy of plague prevention.
