SZEMPONTOK AZ AMERIKAI (1776) ÉS A MAGYAR (1849) FÜGGETLENSÉGI NYILATKOZATHOZ 494 pedig a dualista időszak nem volt alkalmas arra, hogy a magyar dokumentumnak olyan, szinte vallásos kultusza alakuljon ki, mint amerikai társának. Úgy vélem, hogy manapság a Függetlenségi Nyilatkozat fontos helyet foglal el ugyan a hazai közösségi emlékezetben, de nem úgy, mint egy dicsőséges jövő kezdetét jelző önálló fejlődés kiindulópontja – ahogyan ez az amerikai Nyilatkozat esetében megfigyelhető –, hanem mint a tragikus, de heroikus nemzeti múlt mementója. CONSIDERATIONS ON THE COMPARISON OF THE AMERICAN (1776) AND HUNGARIAN (1849) DECLARATIONS OF INDEPENDENCE by Csaba Lévai SUMMARY Similarities between the American and Hungarian Declaration of Independence were discussed by contemporaries, and the issue has also been examined by historians. Yet most of these investigations have so far focused on a formal comparison of the two documents, or on the identification of their ideological roots, with much less attention paid to textual analysis. Discussing the role played by the conscious presentation of violence in the two Declarations, the present paper aims to apply this second approach. It highlights how the authors of these documents, in order to enhance the influence of their message, used “elements of violence.” The article does not aim at providing a comprehensive comparison of the two Declarations; alongside the aspect of “elements of violence,” it only deals with certain factors (such as the circumstances of their birth) which appeared important from the perspective of the analysis.
