ELHANYAGOLT KÁRPÓTLÁS 730 for Abandoned Property. As the first national institution in charge of the wealth of victims, the Government Commission was expected to offer compensation to survivors. By putting the affairs managed by the local agents of this institution in a legal and historical context, the paper offers an insight not only into some aspects of the relations between Jews and non-Jews in the postwar period, but also into the way in which this relationship and the process of restitution was influenced by other actors (such as the Commission itself, the political parties, and the government), as well as into the attitude adopted by the central organisations representing the Jews.
