Mivel egyes lakók túlélését aktívan segítették, míg másokkal az életüket és vagyoni helyzetüket súlyos veszélybe sodró rendelkezéseket szigorúan betartatták, a hagyományos tettes-áldozat-szemlélő kategóriarendszerbe a házmesterek holokauszt alatti szerepe nehezen illeszthető be. JANITORS DURING THE SHOAH By István Pál Ádám SUMMARY This paper offers a social and cultural historical analysis of Budapest janitors, with a special attention to their activities during World War II. While demonstrating how these otherwise marginalized professionals could become extremely powerful by 1944 thanks to the wartime circumstances, it also seeks to reveal the Jew-baiting and profiteering by which the janitors tormented the Jewish tenants. The paper underlines the interwar tradition of tipping the janitors as something which gained importance especially during the Hungarian Holocaust. On the one hand, this tradition influenced the survival chances of Jewish individuals, on the other hand, it explains the individual decisions made by non-Jewish janitors during the war.
