Az egyetlen kivétel Dienes András Petőfiről szóló kötete volt,86 de ez is jobbára a költő katonaéletével és halálának körülményeivel foglalkozott, s nem adott átfogó pályaképet. Összegezve elmondható, hogy a centenárium történetírásának volt egy csúcsteljesítménye (Szabó Istvánék debreceni kötete), megjelent jó néhány megbízható monográfia (Mérei Gyula, S. Sándor Pál művei), egy becsületes, noha nem különösebben invenciózus összefoglaló (Eckhart Ferenc), de a termés többségére inkább a középszerűség jellemző. Pedig a magyar történetírás potenciálisan jobb volt, mint amit megmutatott magából ezen az évfordulón – ennek azonban nem szakmai, sokkal inkább politikai okai lehettek. THE CENTENARY OF THE HUNGARIAN REVOLUTION AND WAR OF INDEPENDENCE OF 1848–1849 IN HUNGARIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY By Róbert Hermann SUMMARY The paper explores the political and scholarly context in which the historical works published on the occasion of the centenary of 1848–1849 were born. While all the democratic parties (or those identifying themselves as democratic) of the post-1945 political regime were the self-confessed heirs of the 1848–1849 Revolution, opinions differed about what this heritage actually meant. The centenary itself was characterised by the same state of transition that shaped the politics of the country at that time. While the harbingers of the authoritarian communist regime were already present, a great variety of scholarly works, written from several different perspectives, were also published by scholars of a bourgeois social background. Despite the great number of publications, only a few of them stood the test of time, and, characteristically, their authors were soon pushed to the periphery of scholarly life.
