RIBI ANDRÁS 337 THE ACTIVITIES OF THE CHAPTER AND THE HOSPITALLER CONVENT OF (SZÉKES)FEHÉRVÁR IN PRACTICE By András Ribi SUMMARY A complete survey of the documents issued by the chapter and the Hospitaller convent of (Székes)fehérvár and the consequent analysis of their activities as places of authentication of national competence is a long-standing deficit of Hungarian medieval research. Based on an analysis of the reports (relationes) issued by these institutions, the paper argues that, in the case of royal grants made in favour of the aristocracy, frequently concerning several counties, it was the flexibility of the places of authentication that made the successful accomplishment of the commissions entrusted to them possible. This was in full accordance with both the expectations of society and the requirements of the royal court. While no general typology can be offered, the following can be proposed as common features: (1) the absence of parallel relationes in the case of legal processes; (2) in the secular sphere, the more frequent resort to court notaries as emissaries; and, (3) while in the case of the chapter the more distant missions were undertaken by the clergy benefited, in the convent such cases were entrusted to the cruciferes.
