IDŐSEBB BRUNSZVIK ANTAL (1709–1780) KÖZÉLETI KARRIERJÉNEK VÁZLATA 1122 A SKETCH OF THE PUBLIC CAREER OF ANTAL BRUNSZVIK SR. by János Nagy SUMMARY The paper surveys the public career of Antal Brunszvik Sr., a faithful public servant of Maria Theresa, in the mirror of his unpublished autobiographical draft and his private and official letters. A talented noble lawyer from the county of Pozsony, Brunszvik rose from the position of secretary to the Lieutenancy Council to various judicial offices at the Royal Table. His rise was facilitated by the diets of 1751 and 1764–65, as well as by his outstanding performance as a royal commissioner while at the time already in his capacity as secretary at the chancellery during the period of the regulation of tenant dues in Hungary from 1766 to 1774. The analysis extends to Brunszvik’s family background, education and culture, his relations to the political elite, his activities at the diets, his missions as royal delegate, and, last but not least, his commission as vice-president of the Galician provincial law court.
