CSÁKY ISTVÁN (1635-1699) ÉS A POLITICA PHILOSOPHIAI OKOSKODÁS 909 Hungary. As a member of the committees of 1674 and 1675, Csáky was entrusted with the task of drawing back the refugees (Hung, bújdosók) to the ruler’s fidelity, while, as főispán of Bereg and Szepes, he made efforts to protect the interests of the county nobility against the policies of the court. One of the basic aims of the Argument, therefore, mediating as it did a catholic courtly ethics based on moral philiosophy, but also the ideas of Habsburg absolutism, may have been to emphasise Csáky’s fidelity to the court, and to draw the attention of contemporary Hungarian nobility to the importance of getting acquainted with courtly political culture. At the same time, Csáky may also have used his work as a piece of argument to support a compromise settlement of the conflict opposing the Viennese government and the Hungarian estates, rejecting both the policies of the refugee movement and the absolutist ideas of the court.
