A SZÉCHENYI-KOSSUTH-VITA MÁSODIK SZAKASZA 629 suth” in the Jelenkor was both preceded and followed by a great number of analyses, mainly by Kossuth in the Pesti Hírlap. The debate launched long waves, prompting several actors of public life to formulate their views. The resulting texts reflect a multi-centered political worldview, which expressed the complexity of changes in a differentiated form. In the course of the debate, alongside the liberal-elitist views favoured by Széchenyi, which urged for close cooperation with the imperial government, the dominant role was played by the democratic ideas elaborated by Kossuth and his circle, which attributed an ever increasing role to constitutional institutions and social movements.
