A birtokigazgatás összesített működési és adminisztrációs költségei a zárgondnokságot megelőző és a konszolidációs időszakban (váltóforintban krajcárok nélkül) ESTATE MANAGEMENT, FARMING, DEBT SERVICING The Finances of Count László Festetics from the Period of Taking over His Inheritance to the Early Phase of the Sequestration of His Estates, 1820-30 by György Kurucz (Summary) As the descendant of a Transdanubian aristocratic family, Count László Festetics (1785-1846) inherited large estates and a manageable amount of liabilites from his father, Count György Festetics (1755-1819), who has since been considered an outstanding member of Hungarian noble society on account of his foundations to promote contemporary intellectual life, including the establishment of a farming college in 1797 in order to train stewards and disseminate modem fanning technique as well as profit-oriented estate management. This paper is a case study examining the question of how and why Count László Festetics, despite being a successful producer of agricultural goods as well as capitalizing on the short lived boom following the Napoleonic wars, was nonetheless so adversely affected by the overall European crisis of marketing agricultural products. The author also tried to reconstruct the stages of the process in which he gradually became completely indebted, leading to his voluntary sequestration, whereby he waived his financial independence and an authorized sequestrator was designated to manage his estates and deal with his outstanding debts.
