SZENT LÁSZLÓ HORVÁTORSZÁGI HÁBORÚJÁRÓL 477 king Ladislaus was invited to intervene in Croatia by some of the locals, albeit it is possible indeed that it was queen Helen who had turned for help to her own brother. The king of Hungary prepared the ground for his attack, and chose the right moment for it, in the most practical way possible. It was probably in order to consolidate his authority over the border regions that he decided before the war, presumably in 1089 or 1090, to organise a new bishopric for the regions beyond the Drava river, and then wainted for the occasion when all went according to his plans. It was in the spring and early summer of 1091 that King Ladislaus finally conquered the mountainous areas of Croatia, which, after the death of king Zvonimir, and during the brief reign of Stephen II, had sunk into an ever deepening political crisis and was consequently unable to resist the attack. The Hungarian king appointed his nephew, prince Álmos, as king of Croatia (with a coronation possibly taking place in the fall of 1091). Although the powers with interests in the Adriatic region were unable to prevent Hungarian expansion, king Ladislaus eventually failed to conquer, as he certainly intended, the Dalmatian coast.
