VÁROSI TISZTVISELŐK A KÉSŐ RENDI TÁRSADALOM KORSZAKÁBAN 1111 dúlt a társadalmi térben: a korábban a polgári közösségben meghatározó, a megbízható számvitellel összefüggő tapasztalat és a személyes ismertségre alapozott bizalom, illetve a rendi világban való eligazodáshoz és a nemesi körben történő megjelenéshez szükséges nemesi jogállás és ügyvédi előélet mellett új összetevő jelent meg a színen — a polgárság számára is elérhető és a hivatali gyakorlatban kamatoztatható iskoláztatás. A városi tisztviselők heterogén társadalmi rétegének e három norma — a polgári kötődés, a nemesi minta hatása és az iskoláztatás révén elérhető társadalmi emelkedés - metszéspontjába helyezett vizsgálata a jövőben tovább finomíthatja a felbomló rendi és a születő modern társadalomról szerzett ismereteinket. ON THE BORDERS BETWEEN NOBILITY, CITIZENRY AND MEN OF LETTERS: URBAN MAGISTRATES IN THE DECADES BEFORE 1848 by Tóth Árpád (Summary) By a social historical analysis of urban magistrates who were active in the decades before 1848, the study aimes at locating this social group, numerically small but presumably of much greater influence, within the framework of contemporary society. Having estimated their probable numbers, the paper goes on to examine their relationship to civic and noble status, and then it presents the peculiarities of careers based on urban status and schooling respectively, mainly on the example of the Lutheran senior magistrates of Pressburg. It also pays attention to the over-urban networks of magistrate dynasties and to their changing features. The final conclusion of the argumentation, based on an extremely varied source basis, is that it was a consequence of the extension and increasing value of schooling, and the simultaneous decrease in importance of the traditional social structuring of urban society, that the social preconditions of modern bureaucratic operation emerged within the ranks of urban magistracies.
