THE HUNGARIAN-POLISH CHRONICLE AND THE DOMESTIC NARRATIVE TRADITION

The present study examines a source - the Hungarian-Polish Chronicle, also known in the research as the Mixed Chronicle - which has so far attracted relatively limited scholarly attention in Hungary. While the Hungarian medievalists, with the exception of Béla Karácsonyi, who examined the stemmatic relationship among the Polish manuscripts which have maintained the text, remained generally untouched by this rather fabuluos narrative of Hungarian history which, moreover, abounds in factual errors, the thirteenth-century chronicle has enjoyed growing popularity in the Polish and Slovak historiography in recent decades. In the wake of a monographic treatment by Ryszard Grzesik from Poznan, and several articles he devoted to the same topic, Martin Homza, who published the narrative source in a Latin-Slovak bilingual edition, also took his stance with regard to the Chronicon mixtum. In this study I present the results of medieval research abroad grouped around three major problems, and examine the extent to which certain details need to be modified or
