BARON JÓZSEF EÖTVÖS AND THE COUNTY OF BÉKÉS by Gábor Gángó Summary The study surveys the aspects of the life of Baron József Eötvös which were connected to the county of Békés, based on archival sources and the results of local history which have not been used so far in this respect. The first part explores the circumstances of the defeat he suffered in Békés in the course of the elections for the 1847 parliament. The second part reconstructs the estates held by Eötvös and his relative and friend, Ágoston Trefort, in the county of Békés in the 1850s, and their management. The third, final part examines the role that Eötvös and Trefort played in three major economic-social enterprises in the 1860s, namely in establishing and running the Economic Club of Békés County, in initiating and starting the construction of the railway connecting the Great Hungarian Plain and Fiume, and in alleviating the humanitarian crisis caused by the 1863 dearth on the Great Hungarian Plain.
