REMARKS ON THE LIFE OF JÁNOS PULYAI by István Seres (Summary) Until the publication by Imre Lukinich of his excellent source collection, the work of János Pulyai called „The Peace of Szatmár" had been practically the only source on the important settlement which took place at Szatmár in 1711. It was as the secretary of János Pálffy that Pulyai was witness to the events, but his work was rather based on contemporary documents, most of which were handed over to him by Sándor Károlyi. The work has been published several times, the latest edition being prepared by one of the greatest researchers of the Rákóczi revolt in the 20th century, Imre Bánkúti, as his last major work. Yet, despite a fairly long research, we currently know very little about the circumstances in which the work was written, and the life of the author is generally based on concise biographical summaries which offer well-known but rather sparse information. The present article is aimed at filling at least partially this gap. The bunch of original documents which was unearthed at the University of Szeged, and is presented here for the first time, has provided a good basis for trying to describe the birth of this fundamental text and its circumstances, and at the same time to reveal whatever can be known about the origins and relations of the author himself.
