Tanulmányok - Cieger András: A számok szorításában. Lónyay Menyhért pénzügyminisztersége (1867–1870) VI/1295

1330 CIEGER ANDRÁS After three years in office, by the beginning of 1870 Lónyay's position became increasingly untenable in politics. He gradually lost all support, his conflicts became more and more profound and numerous. These conflicts eventually came out into the open and led inexorably to his resigation. The last chapter discusses this process. The author demonstrates that Lónyay himself deemed his resignation unavoidable. He recognized that he would not be able to carry out his economic policy: he was unable to assert budgetary rigour, he lacked the stamina to implement tax reform and few shared his ideas about the state's proper role in vitalizing economic growth. Aside from his personal conflicts the implementation of his ideas were hampered by effects of economic recession, which began to appear in 1869. /
