Tanulmányok - Molnár András: A Muraköz 1848-ban II/293

326 MOLNÁR ANDRÁS checked in time by government commissioner Csány and the local officials of Zala County, so social tension did not broaden to become a national conflict. The Hungarian principals of Medjumuije treated the Croat population of the district with special care and very tactfully during the events of 1848, so they managed to counterbalance the inciting propaganda, social demagogy, and irresponsible promises of the Croat nationalists. There were only two Croat pastors who were openly anti-Hungarian in Medjumuije, and the majority of the Croat population refused to be annexed to Croatia in the autumn of 1848. They even fought against the plundering soldiers of Jelaiiic. The Croat members of the National Guard defended their homeland with arms in hand against disannexation. The region could be annexed to Croatia only by force, neglecting the wish of the population there.
