THE PRESERVATION OF SOME ARCHAEOLOGYCAL LEATHER-FRAGMENTS FROM A MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT The archaeologycal excavations do more than ten years ago by a group of research-workers from History-Institute “A.D.Xenopol ’’-Iasi , in the ancient princely-residence of Baia , have brought out to light , besides all the other objects , some leather-fragments . The town of Baia is situated in the north-west part of Moldavia- Romania, occupying the geographical space where Carpathian Hills meet the plain. Baia was the first residence of voivodeship situated between Nistru, Carpathian Mountains and the Black Sea, begin one of oldest Romanian urban concentration!. The medieval routes reflect the trading relations between this town and Ttransylvania and Poland, as well as the variety of trades dealt with by the Baia , s inhabitants 2. We do benefit now by the two volumes of an ample monography , by a plenty of studies mainly elaborated on the bases of the archaeologycal discoveries. The national and regional Museums have increased their patrimony after the excavations from Baia . Thanks to these excavations we can present now our debates. The presence of these fragments is not accidental. We know that breeding and hunting very spread among other trades of the people who lived in Moldavia . That ,s why they used to process the leather produce. The leather samples that we shall present here come from a dwelling built in the first half of the XTVthcentury3. The fact that we found both finished objects and pieces still in process of their manufacturing led us to the conclusion that they come from a leather workshop . The town Baia appears in the written documents as the beneficiary of many : furriers , shoemakers , bookmakers and leather artisans 4. The register of the “St.John Brotherliness “ of Sibiu mentioned during the XVth Century 14 journeymen shoemakers of Baia , together with those of Transylvania or of Curtea de Argeş ( Court of Arges ) , Wallachia 5. 78
