CT-A perspective non-destructive method for investigation of metalwork Tomography means radography obtained by movind the X-ray source or film in small defined steps until the total object is scanned. Computerized tomography has been used in medical applications since “70 CT is a non-distructive method used successfully by some of the greatest museums” British Museum, State Museums, Louver, in investigation of archaeological and art objects. In 1994 M.N.I.R. in cooperation with I.C.P.E begin a research program based on archaeological objects, the first applications by CT on museal objects in our country. In 1996, M.N.A.R. joins to this program starting CT analysis on some works of art made of gilded silver or silveres cooper. CT meassurements were carried to clarify the production process, the inner structures and the hidden parts of these objects, restored or unrestored, to make the possible restoration. In particular, computer tomography delivers “destruction free” results which are especially valuable due to the amount of data contained and their special reference. On the other hand CT is an expensive technique and despite everything there are still a number of unanswered questions, such as what kind of materials were employed or how the original inner parts of the objects. 39
