I. Natural Environment

consequence of the growth in number and in area of the settlements - was based on this simultaneous exploitation of different ecosystems offering particular advantages, without any doubt. The variety of resources was important not only because it provided a complex diet, but also because it assured the survival of the human communities when one of these ecosystems was disturbed (flood or dry years, invasion of pests, epidemic in animal livestock etc.) and, last but not least, it offered a greater chance of survival in the case of inter-tribal conflicts. 9
