Considerations concerning the lapidarium of Alba Iulia 's Romano-Catholic

cathedral

(summary)

The author wants to present some aspects concerning identification of the stone fragments from the lapidarium of Alba Iulia's cathedral, actually placed on the first floor of the northern tower. After a short review of the lapidarium, the author describes the inventory’ as it was found on the spring of 1996. The majority’ of the medieval stone sculptures are proceeding from restoration works of the architect Möller István, in 1901- 1911.

In the monograph of the Alba Iulia's cathedral published by Entz Géza in 1918, one cand find numerous pieces from this lapidarium, but the author is calling the attention to missing-pieces, these ones having a great importance and a special artistic value. Concerning the circumstances of discovering of the collection, the author is publishing a letter wrote by Möller István to the National Commission for Monuments, where the architect is suggesting the necessity to set up a lapidarium in the northern tower of the cathedral, and until this arrangement, the pieces should be stored in the City Museum from Alba Iulia.

As a result of evaluation, in the summer of 1998 there were registered 441 pieces, with pictures and a brief description of them.
