Kölcsey Ferenc High School

The oldest school in Satu Mare was established in 1608. It was located in the place of the present Kölcsey Ferenc High School, in the intersection of Ştefan cel Mare Street and Păcii Square. In 1610 the institution was given the rank of a gymnasium. Constructed in 1822, the building was small in its first form, with a single storey and only six rooms. It was only at the end of the 19th century, that its wing on Ştefan cel Mare Street was enlarged and another storey was built on it. The construction was complemented in 1902 by building the second storey on the other wing and creating the faţade in Classical style, the way it can be seen today. The mural from the teacher's room was painted by Lajos Bartók between 1890-1891.
