County Military Center - Babeş-Bolyai University At the beginning of the 20th century, there were three military barracks in Satu Mare. The first one - named the old barrack - was situated on the Unirii Boulevard, in the north-western side of the city. The Francis Joseph Barrack was used by the Austro-Hungarian army, and it functioned on Henry Coandă Boulevard, while the third one, still existing nowadays on Transilvania Boulevard, was the residence of the Hungarian Home-Army. This building was constructed at the end of the 19th century and it has always kept its military destination. It is only for a few years, though, that a side wing has been taken over by the Babeş-Bolyai University. The spacious building designed in an L shape is built in Classical style. The simplicity of the building which lacks almost every kind of decoration is emphasized by the rhythm of the windows. Those from the upper level are provided with trapezoidal shaped gables. The two rows of windows corresponding to the two levels of the building are separated by a horizontally positioned, emphasized cornice. 125
