the founder of the Piarist Order. It is particular that the people who are listening to the sermon of the saint are depicted in Hungarian noble cloths. The table of the altar has the form of a sarcophagus, the white and golden tabernacle is put on the top of it, in the middle of two adoring angel. The door of the tabernacle is decorated with a bas-relief representing the Crucifixion. The altar is completed on the top, over the entablature and on the vault, with a stucco decoration, representing angels offering a crown for the patron saint and putties with garlands. The baroque forms dominate the exterior of the church: the main faţade is decorated with statues, and prominent cornices and pilasters. The tower is in the front of the main faţade, and it has a curved contour. On the upper level, and on the side-faţades of the tower the traces of the restoration work of Miklós Ybl can be observed, made after the earthquake of 1834. On the cornice four-four stone-statues are put on the each side of the church, held by volutes, while on the third level of the tower is the monumental coat-of-arm of the Károlyi family. The roof is mansard, a rare technical solution for a church. (TSz). Cărei. Biserica greco-catolică „Sf. Arhangheli Mihail şi Gavril” Biserica greco-catolică din Cărei a fost construită între 1737-1739, de către Demeter Rácz (1710-1782), administratorul plenipotenţiar al domeniului familiei Károlyi. Necesitatea unei noi biserici a devenit evidentă după izbucnirea unui conflict între comunitatea greco-catolică românească, mai numeroasă, şi cea ruteană, mai redusă numeric, asupra dreptului de utilizare a bisericii din lemn construită de comunitate în anul anterior. Construcţia unui nou edificiu destinat comunităţii greco-catolice rutene a fost finanţată de către Demeter Rácz. Biserica este unul dintre cele mai interesante, şi printre primele edificii de cult greco-catolic construite din cărămidă: are două turnuri pe faţada de vest, un turn-cupolă deasupra navei şi încă o cupolă peste sanctuar. Raportat la suprafaţa pe care o ocupă, biserica este destul de înaltă, monumentalitatea edificiului fiind accentuată de coifurile turnurilor în formă de bulb şi cu lanternă. Aspectul exterior este diversificat cu ajutorul pilaştrilor, al cornişelor şi al ancadramentelor bogat decorate. In interiorul bisericii, pe partea de vest a cupolei de deasupra navei a fost construită o galerie destinată patronilor bisericii, accesibilă din podul navei printr-o scară săpată în zid. în partea de est a cupolei există un basorelief din stucatură reprezentându-i pe cei patru Evanghelişti. Interiorul este în totalitate decorat cu ornamente din stucatură, iar deasupra uşii de acces în galerie se află blazonul lui Demeter Rácz. Sub 44
